In the UK, a death must normally be registered within 5 days in the district in which it has occurred. If a Coroner is involved, it may not be possible to register the death within 5 days. The Coroner will advise you on when to register the death.
At the Registrar’s Office:
You should take with you the Medical Certificate issued by the doctor showing the cause of death and the deceased’s Medical Card. The registrar will also require the following information about the deceased:
- Full name
- Marital Status
- Date of Birth
- Place of Birth
- Occupation
- Maiden Name (if female and married)
- Spouse’s Name
- Spouse’s Date of Birth
- Spouse’s Occupation
The Registrar will issue a Green Certificate which is required by the Funeral Director. The Registrar will also provide however many certified copies of the entry of death, these may be required by the family to give to Insurers, Banks etc.
